we've talked about the minimum wage this week which obama had the big speech about on wednesday. even though you have job creation, still a lot of this in the service sector and bartenders, it's not great jobs and not paying so well. i think we're going to morph into a much more constructive debate about what are people earning and what is their livelihood and security? >> that's a fantastic point. you look at the unemployment, break it down by race. we're seeing .6 decrease in african-americans and .4 in hispanics and .2 with whites. no change in asian. but the larger question, seems to be and you've been pushing this, transitioning from focusing on the unemployment number and focusing on the kind of work that people are -- >> the kind of jobs people are actually getting. >> with jobs that people have to try to make ends meet and the ends are not meeting when you're making 15,000. >> you're getting mcdonalds and walmart, large sources of employment. but you have a lot of government transfer payments to meet them. we're in this mix. the employment situation has improved and we sh

also in the context of what we're talking about in terms of what makes him a great leader. your comments on the president? >> of course, i didn't like hearing it. i guess some of his enemies liked hearing it. kind of a profound recognition of limitations from a man who spoke of wanting to lead a transformational presidency. last night in spelling it out, i said can't we compromise and get some things done. he said, great changes only come when one party calls the shots, whether it was roosevelt in the early '30s or lbj after canada's assassinati assassination, early part of ronald reagan. that's sad to me because i don't think we'll get one party for a long time. i see us split down the middle for a long time. he's basically saying we can't do anything big until that's the case. that bothered me. there was a personal moment. howard fineman noticed it more than i did when he seemed to be talking in a rare way from a man who is somewhat distant about the personal problem he's had of being president. he's had to be scrutinized. he does not like being scrutinized. i don't know

talk about this relationship between president mandela and president obama. >> you know, wolf, i thought the president was very eloquent yesterday, talking about what president mandela meant to him. in many ways i think mandela was partly responsible for barack obama's own political awakening. one of the great legacies of mandela particularly in america is that it was an awakening for so many people that people were looking at south africa, this land that with terrible prejudice, terrible authoritarian government and we were looking at it as almost a proxy for what had happened in america during the civil rights movement and i think it awakened and it was a revelation for many, many americans. >> i'm sure president obama and i'm sure you'll agree was deeply disappointed when he was in south africa earlier this year, with his family, he was not able to go and meet president mandela, because he was so gravely ill. i'm sure he would have loved to have done that, but he obviously couldn't. he'll head to south africa in the coming days for the funeral, this will be an important event not only
